Using AI to Help Grade, With a Person in the Loop
Faster feedback helps students. Keeping a person in the loop keeps it fair. Here is the balance we settled on.
Students learn faster when feedback comes back quickly. Marking by hand is slow. AI can close that gap, but grading is exactly the place where a wrong, confident answer does real harm.
Let AI draft, let a person decide
We do not let a model hand out final grades. It drafts feedback and flags a suggested score. A teacher reviews, adjusts, and signs off. The student gets feedback in minutes and still gets a human standing behind the mark.
Where we keep the human
- Anything near a pass or fail boundary.
- Answers the model is unsure about.
- Any appeal from a student.
The result
Teachers spend their time on judgment calls instead of routine marking. Students get faster feedback. And because a person signs every grade, the process stays fair and easy to defend.
